How Storyliner Works

Three powerful concepts work together to help you build stories with emotional resonance and structural integrity.

📍

The 7 Stages

A linear progression that guides your story from the hero's ordinary world to the transformed resolution. Each stage has a clear purpose.

Think of it as: Your story's GPS

Dual-Track Planning

At each stage, you develop TWO parallel tracks: the Storyline (external plot events) and the Heartline (internal character arc).

Think of it as: Plot + Character in harmony

🌉

The Writer's Bridge

A guiding question at each stage that forces you to connect the external event with the internal transformation. This is the secret sauce.

Think of it as: The "why it matters" moment

How It All Fits Together

Each of the 7 stages contains both tracks plus the Bridge. Here's the pattern:

📖 Storyline

The external plot

"What happens in the world?"

💗 Heartline

The internal arc

"What's happening inside the character?"

🌉 Writer's Bridge

The connection

"How does the external drive the internal?"

Storyline × Heartline × Bridge = Story that resonates

Stage 1: Hero and World

Introduce the hero and their ordinary world

Present the protagonist's normal life, environment, and relationships—establishing the status quo. A subtle detail hints at a deeper conflict and the protagonist's hidden desires or fears.

📖 Storyline Prompt

What is the hero's ordinary world? What defines their daily routine, relationships, and environment?

💗 Heartline Prompt

What is the protagonist's greatest desire or fear? What inner wound or longing shapes who they are?

🌉 The Writer's Bridge

"How does a subtle detail in the hero's ordinary world hint at their deeper dissatisfaction and foreshadow the main conflict?"

⚠️ Common Pitfalls

  • Overloading with backstory

Introduce only essential details that hint at deeper layers without overwhelming the reader.

  • Failing to establish clear stakes

Emphasize what might be lost if the status quo persists.

🎬 Genre Examples

  • Fantasy:A young villager dreams of escaping a mundane life.
  • Modern Drama:An office worker's routine masks hidden personal struggles.
  • Sci-Fi:A technician lives in a technologically advanced but emotionally sterile society.
